Zespół Chinas Comidas, założony pierwotnie w 1977 roku w Seattle w stanie Waszyngton, był jednym z najwcześniejszych przedstawicieli ruchu art punk, znanym z połączenia no wave i proto-punku z radykalną, feministyczną i silnie polityczną poezją wokalistki Cynthii Genser. W swoich najwcześniejszych składach, w składzie którego znaleźli się członkowie innych prowokatorów art-punku z Seattle, takich jak Red Dress i The Tupperwares, zespół supportował później takie zespoły jak DOA, Black Flag i Ultravox, a jego pełny cykl koncertów jako support Dead Kennedys został niestety ograniczony do jednego. Po wydaniu kilku płyt, przenieśli się do Los Angeles w poszukiwaniu kontraktu płytowego, po czym ostatecznie rozwiązali zespół, pozostawiając po sobie zwięzłą dyskografię i kultową grupę fanów. Ta składanka Retrospective 77-81 łączy w sobie dwie siedmiocalowe EP-ki, pierwotnie wydane przez Exquisite Corpse Records – Peasant/Slave z 1978 r. i Snaps (Portrait of a Fan) z 1979 r., a także partię niepublikowanych rzadkości, dem i koncertowy cover utworu „The Witch” (pierwotnie w wykonaniu The Sonics), tworząc kompletną kapsułę czasu.

Originally formed in 1977 in Seattle, Washington, Chinas Comidas were one of the earliest exemplars of the art punk movement, renowned for their fusion of no wave and proto-punk with frontwoman Cynthia Genser’s radical feminist and highly political poetry. Featuring members of fellow Seattle art-punk provocateurs such as Red Dress and The Tupperwares in their earliest formations, the band would go on to open for the likes of DOA, Black Flag and Ultravox, while a full run supporting the Dead Kennedys would be sadly cut down to just one show. Following a handful of releases, they would relocate to Los Angeles in search of a record deal before ultimately dissolving, leaving behind a succinct discography and cultlike following. This Retrospective 77-81 compilation collates their two 7″ EPs originally released on Exquisite Corpse Records – 1978’s Peasant/Slave and 1979’s Snaps (Portrait of a Fan), along with a batch of unreleased rarities, demos and a live cover of 'The Witch’, (originally by The Sonics), making for a definitive time capsule collection.
